Simple Pleasures

Monday, January 14, 2013

We don't necessarily need pretty things to survive, but sometimes the small details make average living feel special.

I thought I'd share a few favorite things that have made my days a little brighter.

I have always hated perfume smells- because often they make me sick. Some of them instantly make me dizzy and nauseous. And then other times, something smells good in the bottle but doesn't mingle with my personal scent... I'm serious. But anyway, recently I was in one of my favorite shops in Charleston and discovered a smell that made me kind of swoon. And I kind of feel like a woman when I wear it.

Speaking of Swoon... I promise that pun wasn't intentional, but it's awesome... I have a new favorite necklace... I mean I will wear it with everything I have if I can. I LOVE love this necklace. It was handmade from Kim Dean of Swoon . She doesn't have her new stuff up yet, but if you want a custom design I can't tell you how amazing her artwork is- and how special this necklace makes me feel.

This summer I had the absolute pleasure of studying under Chef, Stylist, Food Writer and Photographer Aran Goyoaga. I am still inspired daily by her and what I've learned, and luckily a few months after her book released I can continue learning from her at home. So I've been cooking my way through her book Small  Plates & Sweet Treats, that you can purchase online or at Anthropologie. And I've been letting her inspire me to practice every day, my kind of styling and story-telling through food. And I've been using her recipes to try new variants and practice on my friends.

So there you go, my small pleasures and new inspirations. What are yours?

Brothers + Bathing Suits

Friday, April 13, 2012

My friend Blake (seen in red) introduced me to Australian shop owner, Evie of Tattatatscat. He and his brother had these "Wunzy's" made this Christmas... and since bathing suit season is approaching I thought the gentlemen might want an alternative to the average board short. ;)

Take it away Blake,

The Wunzy's are modeled after 1920's men's swimsuits. You email your measurements into Evie and she custom makes each one! She really hustled on this order because I was trying to get them in before my brother left town. She actually made them and shipped them from AUS to the states in time for them to arrive for Christmas Eve! (About one week's time or less). I paid a pretty good penny for shipping to get them here that quick, it was just nice that she honored that.

This photo was taken a on a Canon 5D Mark II. I set up the camera on a tripod and framed it best I could without anybody in the frame, then brought my mom and brother out in the cold and relied on mom to man the autofocus button and advance the shutter. Then I edited them with RAW in Photoshop. It was a good team effort! By the way, my brother's name is Jordan and he lives in San Francisco.

Thanks Jordan & Blake for this fun project... so there you go, a new swim apparel alternative just in time for summer. Give Evie a buzz if you want "Wun" for yourself. ;)

Old-fashioned Christmas

Friday, December 23, 2011

What is it about old-fashioned things that make me want to live in a different world? I want to be that little girl in the red dress with spilling blonde curls and singing Christmas carols. Sometimes I wonder if what appeals to me in the idea of "old-fashioned" is the non-technology of my grandparents. Writing letters, spending time with your family for a sense of enjoyment, going outside... having a conversation without someone pulling their i-phone out and texting or having the temptation to do the same... I guess what I'm trying to say is that somewhere in my heart- I miss the idea of relationship. Of every day conversation, no tv blaring, no computer screen beaming, Just tactile friendship and communion...

Merry Christmas... may we get better at relationship as our technology increases!

Design Find: Sweet Pine Soaps

I found this cool soap maker, Jess Fetzner, who owns, Sweet Pine Soaps on Etsy. I love her little soap styling for these photos too! All her soaps are pure, handcrafted vegan material and I kind of want to try them! This would probably be a nice gift for my hippie brother in Vermont...

Design Find: Kimi & Li Bikini

Tuesday, August 23, 2011

I'm so excited to introduce a new designer find, Kimi & Li Bikini! Kimi & Li, authored by designer Lisa Dorian, is a baby girl bathing suit line sewn on the shores of Hawaii.

Modeling the "bows" design today is my darling Isabel. When I put this cute little suit on her and went to the beach, she got so many compliments. I can remember when I was little I wanted a bathing suit with side cutouts so badly. Now, my little girl is living my bathing suit dreams and she doesn't even know it.

And for your viewing pleasure I took a little video of her exploring in her Kimi & Li original.

Check out Lisa's store, who doesn't love a little baby bikini? It will be shipped to your door with love from Hawaii. If you are interested in your own Kimi Li, use the promo code thecolorfullivingproject in the checkout discount code area to receive a 20% discount!
