Sea Horses

Friday, July 29, 2011

I have always loved Seahorses ever since I was a little girl. They combine two of my favorite things; horses & water. They are such mysterious little creatures. I had a shriveled up dried seahorse I think my dad brought me home from a trip, that I imagined he captured while swimming in the ocean somewhere...

I LOVE this print, but I can't find the artist! It's probably floating around on Etsy, if you find the author, do tell me!

Have a good Friday.... I hope you all swim with the seahorses this weekend.

Decorating a Baby's Room

Wednesday, July 27, 2011

I remember when I was expecting Isabel, as most people do, I nested like crazy and looked up nursery ideas. Of course since I've had her we've moved on to many other projects! But sometimes I love finding little kid friendly spaces to admire for future possibilities or when babybel gets older or when we move... or eventually in the far off distant future have another...

So here's the beginnings of my baby spaces collections!

Food & Home: Summer Salsa re-vamp

Sometimes when I'm hungry and it's hot, I experiment with what I've got laying around to make a snack. actually this happens all the time- sometimes not so great. So this day I wanted a summer salsa and used the ingredients I had around to make it. I have lots of mint growing in the back yard and I love mint in everything, so I decided to see what would happen if I threw it into a bean salsa. It was great! So here's my concoction. Of course some other lovely additions if I had them around would have been mango & cucumbers.

Just chop and mix. Easy Peasy.
Recipe:
Black beans
fresh corn
(just a little) olive oil
lime juice (if lime is fleshy- like mine was, carve out flesh into bowl)
avocado
tomato
mint
cilantro

Summer Print

Happy Monday everyone. Here's a little summer watercolor that is so cute I wish I could find the artist! It's just floating around the web with no tag, but I thought I'd share it for a little Monday treat.

On a personal note, it seems everyone is in transition lately, in a good way. I sure am! I have so many lovely prospects hinging around the corner, I can't wait for them to be final to announce them. We have about 6 friends moving to different places. Both my brothers are moving from NYC & Maine, my husband just got a new job, my brother in law just moved back to NYC... it seems a lot is changing this summer! I am really trying to embrace the summer, because I love the barefoot toes and sunny beach days, but I can't help feel so much excitement for the Fall!!

Just a little update on things lately.

Don't forget to enter the giveaway to win a man in your life a nice shirt, there's one more week!

Angel Food Cake French Toast with Raspberries & Nutella

Tuesday, July 12, 2011

So yesterday I had an idea... I had some left over angel food cake that was a few days old and I was trying to think of a way not to waste it. THEN it came to me. Angel Food Cake French Toast... with a twist.

SO I sliced the angel food cake, dipped it in egg, fried it in a pan with butter until each side was crispy, slathered Nutella in between two pieces, added ice cream, raspberries and a sprinkle of powder sugar.

And it was the best dessert I've made... maybe this year.

Voila!!! Delicious, re-usable cake.

I'm sure you could do this with many other cakes as well... Maybe one day I'll try chocolate!

Workshop Day! Well, I can't give away all the secrets I learned, but if you look closely you'll be able to pick up a few of them! We had two full days of models, hairspray, makeup, shooting, styling, SWEATING, learning and still eating the best food. BTW, We had two meals by Sun in my Belly both were incredible. They've got a few cafes in Atlanta you should try out when you're there.

As you can see the more we got into it, the bigger the mess we made in our studio but I kind of liked it that way... designer shoes and dresses at every corner... photographers all over the floor getting good angles, experimenting with light, hiking through the woods to get amazing shots. The last night, I can't even tell you how incredible it was! They staged a whole wedding that looked like a scene out of Martha Stewart but better. And we got to eat the feast that we photographed! Seriously, I can't wait to show it all to you!

I can't show you any of the actual photographs from any of the shoots that's why it's lots of photos of people taking photos and waiting to style... until they are completely published etc... so here's a little behind the scenes look into our days. I can't wait for you to see more! I'll let you know when they're going to be up on here, and when Once Wed does their feature. To be continued...

Aside from Joy, Emily & Jose, I also met an amazing stylist, Jordan Byers seen in blue stripes, definitely worth checking out!

You are going to adore the actual shoots! Just wait!

Once Wed evening

Wednesday, July 6, 2011

As I mentioned before, I got a sweet little place called, "the sparrow" to stay in on this trip. You can see a little bit of it above. When I arrived there was a little Etsy painting and paloma's nest bracelet with some nice little notes and information waiting for me. I was so excited, and baby-husband free, that I might have had a tear or two in my eyes when I got there. ok that might be dramatic, but it's been a hard year. I am someone who feels loved by hospitality and designer details- it speaks all my languages and senses, so this trip was like an open door to my heaven. OK, I am being real dramatic now! But I really felt this deep, it was just what I needed to be re-inspired.

We were surprised the first night with a cooking demo by a personal chef. Which I was inwardly squealing with delight about. We had an activity to create your own canape using any of the ingredients set out to explore our creative food pairing skills. Which I also secretly took very seriously.

Growing up with a Southern Chef grandmother and a designer, gourmet mother, cooking is just in my blood. My first real job was with Dean & Deluca where I used to long to get behind the counter and cook with the chefs... eventually I worked every counter in that place... anyway all to say food is precious to me, it interests me and it ministers to me. HA!

Some of my combinations were:
Herring, creme fraiche, caviar, caramelized onions and fresh basil
Cambozola Blue Cheese (Camembert Gorgonzola hybrid) prosciutto, strawberries, fresh basil and balsamic reduction

For dinner our chef made pan seared scallops over white creamed polenta, slow roasted grassfed pulled beef with roasted okra, greens and topped with peach slaw. I feel another tear coming on just thinking about it. ok, get it under control anna.
We had homemade peach ice cream with candied spiced peanuts and carmel sauce for dessert, and I went to bed happy and in love with God after a night like that.

Have I completely weirded you out? You can tell what I'm passionate about.

tomorrow it's class time and photo shoots.

A trip to Serenbe

Tuesday, July 5, 2011

Many of you know recently I was in the Chattahoochee Hills of Georgia at a Once Wed-Jose Villa workshop. I can't even begin to describe the personal inspiration and wonder I experienced on this trip.

The word "workshop" sound so boring, like classes and demos... but this experience was far from anything I imagined. One of the other photographers said it was like stepping into a magazine from the moment of arrival, and I literally did not step out of it until I was well on I-85 driving back home the day after everything ended.

One of the first things that I loved was the location Joy & Emily picked to host this event. I had butterflies of wonder and excitement the moment I got there. I had my own cute little apartment all to myself, above a bikeshop and an art gallery. But before I get into the actual workshop, let me set the scene a little for you.

Serenbe is an incredible community that seems to be in the middle of nowhere. There is a farm, farmhouse, inn, cabins, little neighborhoods tucked in with a tiny downtown with cute shops, the town bakery, featured above, where I got that precious little candied bacon cupcake- which was AMAZING!

This little utopia world has been in almost every major home, garden, living magazine and feels a little bit like Stepford Wives meets the Truman show.
(but not in the creepy way, just the strangely perfect way)

It's so amazing there is a section of the town with "Edible landscaping" meaning you can go for a walk and pick from the fruit trees that line the street as you go. I had to check this out on my last day, and it was exactly that. Mainly blueberries were in season and I filled a bag full of berries and made a pie several days later with my blueberry loot.

I had the best food, definitely the best lamb of my life at their downtown restaurant which is pretty much a farm to table restaurant, as they get everything they can from the local farm on site. When you eat like that I think to myself, "oh this is what food tastes like." I even had a new vegetable, roasted romanesco and it was out of this world! It's the alien looking veggie featured. So today is just a few pictures to begin this little journey through Serenbe and my photography/stylist adventures. Stay tuned for the next bit... I promise you'll love it.
